At 9:26 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration shuts down U.S. airspace in response to terrorist attacks, forcing all inbound planes to find alternate destinations. In total, 38 planes are diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, and the hospitable residents of the small Canadian town greet all 7,000 passengers with food, clothing and open hearts. Told with music, humor, and warmth, Come From Away highlights the relationships formed when spirited locals and global passengers come together to embrace empathy, generosity, and shared humanity. By the time the “plane people” depart, defenses are down, romance blooms and lifelong friendships are formed. Based on the inspiring true story of Gander’s unexpected guests, this heart-warming musical highlights the importance of reaching out to those in need and reminds us that community isn’t just where you are from; it is what you build together.
Come From Away is a Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical by Canadian writing duo Irene Sankoff and David Hein who conducted extensive interviews with the residents and passengers to create the show.
The Up In One Production is directed by Nicole Tarcza (Peter And The Starcatcher, Guys & Dolls, Gypsy) with music direction by Russell McCook (Spring Awakening, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Tick, Tick, Boom).
The cast features Kathy Bailey, Mary Kate Barnett, Craig Patrick Browne, Tom Bunker, Allison Dennis, Joe Drummond, Dietz Farcher, David Foster, Ashley France, Amy Le Blanc, Bryan Mechtly, and Abbey Ressa Siojo. Supporting cast includes Adam Blank, Kiara Daniello, Gabrielle Gellys, Kathleen Klein, David Lurie, Kevin McCarthy, Risa Petrone, KT Ryan, and Kate Worthey.
In the spirit of community during this upcoming season of Thanksgiving, Up In One Productions encourages patrons of our Fall Musical to bring with them a non-perishable food item for a local food pantry and/or an item to donate to the local SPCA. Bins for items will be located in the lobby. Thank you; and enjoy the show!
