Philosophy

The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck recognizes that Dutchess County high schools do an exemplary job in educating young people in arts appreciation for the theatrical arts.

The CENTER also recognizes that county high school curricula are rich in courses which examine dramatic literature, both historical and contemporary, and expose young people to the role that drama has played in world History.

Finally, The Center recognizes that county high schools are leaders in supporting students as they perform in both dramatic and musical productions at their respective schools and accomplish all the tasks necessary to present theatrical events for community appreciation.

Therefore, The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck has no intention of competing with Dutchess County high schools in the above academic and extra-curricular areas.

Instead, The CENTER wishes to establish partnership with county high schools in order to teach young people the theatrical skills necessary to enhance their effectiveness in presenting theatrical events.

The CENTER is advantageously positioned to become such a partner for the following reasons:

  • The CENTER maintains a state-of-the-art facility which includes a full stage with wing space, a sophisticated fly system, an orchestra pit, a 165 seat house, a well-equipped shop, light and sound control areas with complementary technical inventories, a full dressing room, a spacious lobby with box office and concession areas, and managerial office space.
  • The CENTER hosts theatrical productions (including productions which are student driven) and also hosts music, dance and performance art.
  • The CENTER has on its salaried and volunteer staff a cadre of skilled theatrical practitioners including technical and artistic personnel and managerial personnel.

Objectives

The CENTER conducts technical theatrical workshops. The workshops will be taught by an expert practitioner, will be 90 minutes in length, and will be conducted twice-weekly for a fifteen-week period.

Some scholarship money will be available to assist qualified students.

The CENTER will also offer various performance workshops throughout the year. Workshops vary and include Scene Study, Voice, Dance, Acting, Auditioning and Theater Management.

Please check the schedule for workshop updates.
