A Salute To Stephen Foster (1:00AM - 1:00AM)
A Musical Salute to Stephen Foster featuring George Conrad 8 p.m. Friday, September 3
A Labor Day Weekend treat -- George Conrad returns to The CENTER with a musical salute to America's premiere songwriter, Stephen Foster. Mr. Conrad, a celebrated Irish tenor, and his accompanist, Joel Flowers, are returning to The CENTER for an evening of music saluting America’s first great composer, Stephen Foster. Song selections will include such Foster favorites as Oh! Susannah, Ring the Banjo, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, and My Old Kentucky Home, as well as some lesser-known but equally beautiful Foster songs.
“I think that people who know Foster's music will enjoy the nostalgic trip down memory lane,” he added. “For people who don't know Foster, it will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with the music and the man, both of which were integral in the development of American popular culture in the 19th century.”
Mr. Conrad has been a fixture in the Beacon City School District for 22 years as well as a local favorite amongst theatre-goers in the Hudson Valley. He has performed in such CENTER favorites as Hamlet, My Fair Lady, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Christmas Carol, and most recently in The Rocky Horror Show. Mr. Flowers served for many years as the entertainment director for the U.S. Army in Germany, where he also performed and accompanied vocalists at the Theatre Des Westerns and The Deutches Oper in Berlin. Residing in the Hudson Valley since 1994, Mr. Flowers has served as musical director for many local community theater productions and is the community recreation coordinator at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays Tickets: $22 adults; $20 seniors and children David Auburn’s Proof, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play, tells the story of Catherine, a troubled young woman, who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness—or genius—will she inherit? A CENTERstage Production directed by Nicola Sheara. "When we think of the great American playwrights, we think of Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill and Lillian Hellman, in earlier generations; Wendy Wasserstein and Tony Kushner, Jon Robin Baitz and Donald Margulies today: They are always writing about big ideas and wrapping them in family squabbles that get us where we live. Welcome David Auburn to the club.
