RENT

March 12-28, 2010

Up in One Productions presents Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway hit, Rent, March 12-28 at The CENTER for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck. The musical, based loosely on Puccini's opera, La Bohème, follows a year in the lives of seven impoverished artists living the Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village under the shadow of AIDS.

The show, which has enjoyed phenomenal success and universal critical acclaim, was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, earning four, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. It features such beautiful and poignant musical numbers as "Seasons of Love", "One Song Glory", "Christmas Bells", "La Vie Boheme", and the title song.

Rent premiered off–Broadway on January 25, 1996, and, due to its extraordianry popularity, moved to the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway in April of the same year. The original Broadway cast included Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Jesse Martin. It closed on September 7, 2008, after a 12-year run and 5,124 performances.

Author Johnathan Larson never lived to see the success of his work, dying suddenly from an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm the day the show was scheduled to preview. Rent is a semi-autobiographical work, as Larson incorporated many elements of his life into the show. In 2005, Rent was translated into a film directed by Chris Columbus and featuring many of the show’s principals from the original stage production.

The Up In One Production is produced by Diana di Grandi, directed and choreographed by Marcus D. Gregio, with musical direction by Liz Toleno. The production features Jim Nurre (Roger), Stephen Balantzian (Mark), Courtney Pincus (Mimi), Kevin Archambault (Angel), Cat Barney (Maureen), Emily Woolever (Joanne), Thomas Vernier (Collins) and Joshuah Patriarco (Benny). They are joined by a strong supporting cast of versatile actors including Hayli Altman, Nick Anthony, Alex Bennett, Courtney Constantino, Kevin Edwards, MonRay Francois, and Susan Lombard. The Rent set design is by Matt Woolever, lighting design by Heather Brower, and costumes by Kelly Preyer.
