The Fantasticks (8:00PM - 10:00PM)

The Fantasticks

The Fantasticks
May 29-June 14
8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 3 p.m. Sunday

The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical in the world, tells the moving story of two young people who fall in love, though their parents build a wall to keep them apart. Book and lyrics by Tom Jones with music by Harvey Schmidt. A CENTERstage Production directed by Lou Trapani.

The Fantasticks stars Wendell Scherer and Michaela Sweeney as the boy and girl and Andrea Buergers and Deirdre Sepp as their parents. The rest of the talented cast includes Bobby Greffrath, George Conrad, Catleen Kelly, and Josh Patriarco as El Gallo.

The original production opened on May 3, 1960 at the 150-seat Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York's Greenwich Village - where it played for 42 years and 17,162 performances! It has played more than 11,103 U.S. productions in every state and internationally, more than 700 productions have been staged in 67 nations from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Because audiences wanted "Much More" of the timeless tale, The Fantasticks was revived on August 23, 2006 at the Jerry Orbach Theatre at the Snapple Theater Center - where it continues today!

But there’s no need to travel to New York City to enjoy this stage classic. The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck will host The Fantasticks from May 29th to June 14th. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinee performances begin at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for seniors and children and if you phone The CENTER in advance, you may get one child’s ticket free for each adult ticket that you buy. The CENTER’s box office number is (845) 876-3080; hours are 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Tickets may also be purchased on-line at www.centerforperformingarts.org.

Angus Martin - POSTPONED TO LATER DATE (3:00PM - 5:00PM)
Angus Martin

 Angus Martin in Concert

POSTPONED - WILL BE RESCHEDULED

Eclectic performer Angus Martin celebrates music from around the world during a special performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck.

While playing piano, accordion, and acoustic guitar, Martin leads his band of seasoned musical travelers as they spoon out a balmy bouillabaisse of Cuban Sones and Afros, Haitian Kompas and Troubadoux.

His latest CD, Le Demimonde puts the accent on a newfound minimalism. On sparse and spicy gems like “Le Franglais,” “Jardin du Paradis,” and “Afro Bleu,” Martin’s laid-back chops and warm, confiding vocals are peppered with swishing maracas, bubbling congas, birdsong flute, soft bass and sinewy Cuban tres and Venezuelan cuatro.

The lyrics of the songs on his recently-released second CD, which was produced in the Hudson Valley, are in French, English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.

Tickets: $22 adults; $20 seniors/children.
