The Pirates Of Penzance By Gilbert & Sullivan (8:00PM)
Friday Tickets: $22 adults; $20 seniors & children It Is, It Is A Glorious Thing” The Pirates of Penzance Come Ashore in Rhinebeck! The Pirates of the Caribbean may claim Jack Sparrow as their own, but he has nothing on the Pirate King about to plant the pirate flag in Rhinebeck. After all, the Pirate King (of the famous Pirates of Penzance) vows to “live and die a Pirate King,” saying that his work is far more glorious than the dirty work that well-to-do pirates in the cheating world must get through in a day. This Pirate King will have none of it! Welcome to The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert & Sullivan Musical Theater Company’s spring production at The CENTER for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck, opening on Friday, June 6. The tale involves the most unsuccessful band of pirates ever to set sail, their aforementioned brave Pirate King and their brightest star, Frederic, who, on the day he comes of age and is at last free from his pirate apprenticeship, falls in love and vows to bring his former mates to justice. Not so fast, however, once Frederic learns that, by an accident of being born on leap year, he has a good deal of time yet to remain a pirate. A typical Gilbert and Sullivan dilemma is established and ultimately resolved in typical Gilbert and Sullivan fashion, with hilarity and tunefulness. Cindy Kubik directs the show. Cindy has directed and performed extensively in the area and she plans to take the pirate merriment to new levels of silliness. Mathew Camara is the music director and has his own ideas of how to bring out the best in the music to complement the nonsense of the story. Nick Jones is the swashbuckling Pirate King, leader of this band of soft-hearted rogues, and Frederic, the star pirate apprentice, is Chris Tillson. Ruth, who has been devoted to Frederic since he was a babe and who, due to being somewhat hard of hearing, got Frederic into the pirate band in the first place, is Diedra Sepp. Major General Stanley, he of amazing knowledge and the very model of a Modern Major General, is Jim Klosty, and his ward Mabel is Katie DeFiglio. The Sergeant of Police, the brave leader of the fearless group assigned to exterminate the pirates, is Rex Bridges. And there’s a host of pirates, sisters, and police rounding out the mayhem. Performances are at the Center for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck from June 6 - June 22. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm and Sunday matinees are at 3pm. Tickets are $22 and $20 for seniors and children and are available online at www.centerforperformingarts.org or by calling the Center Box Office at (845) 876-3080. You won’t want to miss this tale of adventure and misadventure. A great way to kick off your summer season! www.gsmtc.org
